Episode 1: New World Order

He explains mummification to a young girl in connection with the ritual, but is interrupted by his boss Donna, who calls him "Stevie". He corrects her by calling him "Stephen" while she berates him for taking tours when he should be focusing on selling gifts from the store. Another employee approaches Steven and asks if they will still be eating steak at 7:00 the next evening. He can't remember and assumes the woman is asking him out. She giggles and leaves as Donna returns and asks him what a vegan would eat at a steakhouse. When he dismisses her remark, she leaves. Later, when they close, Donna continues to scold Steven for being constantly late, causing her to put him in inventory. He tries to point out some historical inaccuracies in what the museum sells, but Donna refuses to listen. He tells her that the Ennead is made up of nine Egyptian gods, but only 7 are present in the painting they are selling. Donna jokes about the mistake and continues to insult Steven before firing him. As he leaves, Steven says goodbye to the guard, who greets him as Scotty, to which Steven replies, "That's Steven with the V."
As Stephen Eats, he explains his sleepwalking to a gold-painted street mime who bears a striking resemblance to the man who first put on the glass slippers. Steven helps the performer by tipping him and helping him get tips for photos with tourists in between his rants. He comes to the conclusion that he will need to overcome sleepwalking if he wants to have a girlfriend. He tips the Mime one more time before leaving, which is shown in the puddle's reflection when a green leaf lands on it, causing ripples.
At home, Stephen spreads sand around his bed and locks all the locks on the door. He puts on an ankle brace and starts listening to a podcast about how to stay awake while fiddling with a Rubik's Cube. Clips show him doing other things to stay awake while reading about the Ennead, as the podcast suggests reading the book as a way to stay awake. When Steven hears the words "think of yourself as part of the story", he suddenly wakes up in a grassy field with severe jaw pain. As he gets up, he hears a voice telling him to go back to sleep. He is told to hand over the body to Steven when he doesn't understand, the voice says "The idiot is in control". Steven pulls a golden scarab from his pocket as a staff-wielding figure approaches him from behind. When Stephen turns around, he sees himself invading the castle grounds and is shot at by the guards. The voice tells him to run. Steven runs away as the guards chase after him, missing every shot.
Steven comes to the part of town where Harrow, a long-haired man in a crimson suit (again looking like a dude in glass slippers), is met by people who clear the way for him. A man leads all the townspeople to an open town square, where he comments (in an American accent) on the beauty of the day. He tells people that their job is to make the earth as close to heaven as possible. He asks, "Who wants to go first?" A random man approaches and is greeted by Harrow, who praises him for offering his soul for judgment, "waiting for an opportunity to serve our goddess before she awakes." Harrow places a cane in the man's hands as he performs a ritual to judge a name on behalf of Ammit, the Egyptian funerary deity (god of death). Stephen and the other townspeople watch Harrow's scaly tattoo on his right arm glow slightly before he declares the man a "good man" and hugs him. The guards continue to search for Stephen among the audience as Harrow reveals his name is Arthur. The woman introduces herself to Arthur and Steven watches as his scaly tattoo tilts to the side and turns red. Arthur apologizes to the woman when she receives Ammit's judgment and backs off. People carry away her lifeless body. Armed guards chasing Stephen approached Arthur.
d tell him that they were ambushed during the "exchange" and two of their men were killed. To weed out the spy, Arthur calls out an order in ancient Egyptian, and Stephen is immediately discovered. Arthur identifies Stephen as a mercenary. Stephen introduced himself to the crowd as Stephen Grant from the British Museum gift shop. Arthur demands the return of the scarab.
"You're not giving him anything," the voice says to Stephen. Not understanding what he is doing, Stephen continues to keep the scarab away from Arthur. As the people crowd around Stephen and rip the scarab from his fingers, he passes out and wakes up when he hears a voice saying, "Oh no, the idiot is back." Steven is now standing in the same spot with a bloodied hand and five of the townspeople lying unconscious (perhaps dead) around him. Stephen holds a scarab in his bloodied hand. As he flees in an American van with the driver's side on the left, a voice instructs him not to drop the scarab. While listening to Wham! On the radio, Stephen is followed by several cars, all with non-British driver's seats. As the action intensifies, Steven passes out again, and when he comes to, the windshield is shattered, the attacker is dead, and Steven is holding a gun. Now the voice threatens Stephen so that he does not lose the scarab. Steven doesn't have time to explain as he almost misses the log truck. The Final Destinations truck, the rest of the vehicles are chasing him with logs, except for two. Steven goes crazy again, passes out again and cums when the last jeep stops in front of him and the car falls off the road. The voice scolds him for losing his gun as two guards approach the van, which has stalled. As Steven panics again, the logs from the truck land on the lower roadway of the hill, taking out the guards and waking Steven safe in his apartment again. Steven finds himself chained to the headboard again and feels relieved.
While doing his morning chores, he feeds Gus and notices that his flipper has grown back. At the pet show, an employee is completely baffled by Steven's odd behavior - he can't remember visiting the pet store the day before, but when he sees it's shortly after 5:00 pm, he remembers that he's supposed to have a date. At home, Steven dresses up and goes to a restaurant for a date. When she doesn't show up, Steven calls and reminds her that they were at 7pm Friday. She tells Steven that today is Sunday and that she should lose her number. Completely confused and heartbroken, Steven gives up and places the order knowing nothing about how to order a steak. On his mom's voicemail, Steven makes up a date story as he walks home.
Steven turns the lights on and off in his apartment before indulging in a box of chocolates he bought for his date. He throws some sprinkles on a goldfish tank, and when she doesn't eat, Steven doubts if the fish is really his pet Gus. While picking up chocolates he dropped, he begins to notice strange things in his apartment and investigates behind a loose board above his pantry. He discovers car keys and a mobile phone with several missed calls from "Layla" and one missed call from Duchamp. He calls Leila and is surprised to find that he is still alive after so many months that she has been writing and calling him. Layla demands to know where his British accent came from and calls Steven by his real name, Mark. When Steven asks why she called him that, the call is cut off. Steven hears his name and tries I understand who it is. Hearing a voice telling him, "You need to stop," the lights begin to flicker and Steven frightenedly runs out of his apartment towards the elevator. Steven looks at his reflection as the elevator continues its descent. On the second floor, Stephen hallucinates a creature following him, then wakes up on the bus when he comes face to face with its beak.
Everyone on the bus looks at Stephen as he sees the figure standing on the side of the road, then notices Arthur on the bus as he gets off, realizing that he is real. As Steven enters the museum, he tries to get JB, a former security guard, to help him, but is interrupted by Donna. Steven sees Arthur at the museum and apologizes to Donna. He follows the man he saw on the bus and runs into Arthur walking on his cane. When Steven asks another guard for help, the guard shows his scale tattoo and says, "Thank Ammit."
Arthur explains Ammit's philosophy to Stephen. She was tired of waiting for sinners to commit their sins before punishing them. He tells Steven that Ammit is judging our entire lives, including our future, which we cannot see. Stephen jokes that the historical documents must have forgotten about this part. Arthur believes that Ammit was betrayed and imprisoned by "lazy fellow gods". If she had been free, she might have prevented the fall of the Holy Roman Empire and the Holocaust, among other genocide tragedies. Arthur tells Stephen that Ammit betrayed her own avatar, a term Stephen only knows from popular culture. Arthur knows about the voice in Steven's head and exposes it to Ammit's judgment. As the cane dangles from the scales on Steven's arms, Arthur's scale tattoo shakes uncontrollably, signifying chaos within Steven. The doors of another exhibit open and Stephen runs away from Arthur, who tells the guards to let him go.
That night, Arthur takes inventory himself as the museum closes. As Steven leaves, he hears a dog crying in the distance and follows the sound. Stephen is also being watched. As he hides from the unseen creature, Arthur announces through the museum that Stephen must return the scarab. Steven runs to the men's room to hide, and in the mirror deals with his true alter ego, Mark Spector. Mark explains to Steven that he needs to give him full control if they are to survive this attack. Steven agrees and lets Mark take over when the creature breaks in and attacks him. The creature is then seen attempting to escape, only to be pulled back in and beaten to its presumed final death by a hero in a light gray suit with a face-covering cowl, cowl, and cape. The hero's name is Moon Knight.
Steven wakes up from a dream about the battle he fought as Moon Knight. He unsuccessfully tries to talk to Mark in the mirror. Upon arriving at the museum, he spots the guard, J.B. exhibition area fencing. Steven asks JB. if he can watch the security footage with him, since he might know the culprit. J.B. agrees and they watch the tape. It only shows Steven cowering in front of the exhibit and running away from unseen pursuers before getting up. When he is seen running to the bathroom, J.B. scolds him for "ruining the toilet". Steven tries to describe the demon jackal that was chasing him, but J.B. doesn't believe him. Steven then watches a surveillance tape of Mark leaving in Steven's body.
The manager informs Stephen that the museum has no plans to press charges and offers to book him an appointment with a treatment facility. He returns his name badge and accepts his dismissal. After talking with the golden mime, Steven decides to investigate the mysteries of his apartment. He visits the vault, where the attendant immediately recognizes him and escorts him to a locker. As Steven enters, he notices a small cot, some sturdy boxes, and a duffel bag containing a gun, money, and US banknotes. Passport of Mark Spector, born in Illinois and very similar to Steven. He also finds the scarab he stole in the first episode. It opens and begins to hover over his arm, aiming in a certain direction. While Steven is talking to himself to understand the situation, Mark calls out to him. He apologizes for giving Steven so much information at once, but tells him that he can help if Steven sleeps on a cot so he can get hold of it. Steven refuses without explanation. Mark tells him that he is the Avatar of Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon. Steven leaves the vault and the jackal chases him again. Turning a corner, he approaches Khonshu, who demands that he "give him back". Steven runs out of the facility screaming and falls onto the road in front of the scooter driven by Layla.
She only knows Steven's body as "Mark" and thinks Steven is an alias and that he turned on the phone so she could find him. She expresses how worried she was about his safety despite the fact that he had a suit. She reminds him that she is his wife and he is American. He forces her to take him back to the apartment. Mark tells Steven that Layla shouldn't be in the apartment. She looks around and finds a book of poems that she and Stephen are reading together, after which she notes that the poet is her favorite. She impresses Steven with her knowledge of hieroglyphs. She presents him with the divorce papers that Mark wanted her to have, but Steven has no reason to sign them. He tries to address her by showing her what was in the bag while Mark yells at him to stop and get her out of there. As he is about to show her the scarab, Mark warns that he will kill her. As Steven hesitates, Mark keeps telling him that he shows her the scarab, he is responsible when "they come for her". Losing her patience, Layla shoves Steven very hard to the side and finds him. She says the scarab points to Ammit's ushbati, an item they fought side by side over. Steven tells Layla how scared he is and begs her for help.
At that moment, two policemen knock on the door and go inside. Layla manages to hide while the two look around, one discovers a paperweight that Stephen claims he bought from a paperweight shop. Steven is informed that he has a stolen item. Because he denies it, his passport is found, and Stephen is handcuffed and placed in the back seat. As they drive, the officer in the passenger seat finds information about Mark Spect.
or and the Egyptian dig he and some others ambushed. The aftermath presents archaeologists with a zipper-and-shot style of execution. He is taken to an alleyway and left alone in the car. He realizes where he is when he spots someone with a tattoo like Ammit's followers. Mark tries to get Steven to submit to him, but they are interrupted by Arthur.
Arthur removes the handcuffs from Steven and suggests that the voices in his head were the reason the scales didn't balance in the last episode. Steven sees Khonshu behind Arthur and hears him telling him to kill Arthur. He relays this message to Arthur, who confesses that he can no longer see or hear Khonshu. Arthur offers to take Stephen for a walk, and Honshu sends wind down an alleyway to dissuade him. Arthur tells Stephen that the wind is all Honshu can do without it. Arthur tells Steven that the area used to have a very high crime rate, but since he made everyone followers of Ammit, they leave their doors unlocked. Arthur shows Steven around, much to the chagrin of Khonshu, who blows off Steven's food. Arthur describes Khonshu as an exiled god, while me as Honshu confidently defends his actions and goals to Steven, proclaiming himself "real justice". Arthur claims to have been an avatar of Honshu before Mark. Arthur criticizes Khonshu for only taking revenge on those who have already granted their evil desires, but Ammit pronounces his judgment tentatively. He explains to Steven that the scarab will help them find Ammit's grave. In an attempt to encourage Stephen to turn himself in to Mark, Arthur is asked how Ammit's decision differs from prejudiced action against an innocent man.
As a hypothesis, Steven asks if Ammit would judge a child and kill him for what he might do in 30 years. Arthur enjoys killing a would-be criminal before amputating a diseased limb - bad for the part, better for the whole. Stephen is shocked by this reasoning and categorically refuses to help Arthur any more. Arthur tries to threaten Stephen, but Layla appears. As she approaches Arthur, pretending to give up the scarab, she tells Stephen to summon the suit. When he doesn't understand, she gives him a scarab and runs with it. Arthur uses Ammit's power to summon another jackal. As Layla tries to explain to Steven that only he can summon the suit, Mark starts telling him that he needs to obey. As Steven hesitates, the Jackal bursts in, but only he can see him. Steven is thrown out of a window and manages to summon the Moon Knight suit without giving control to Mark. When Steven is attacked by an invisible jackal, Layla tries to save him. Steven takes off his coat and takes the Jackal in the middle of the street, while passers-by see only Moon Knight moving about alone. Steven allows Mark to take control and become a Full Moon Knight. Lyal tells him to "get out of here". MK eventually impales the jackal before transforming back into Steven, who notices that the scarab is gone.
The man picks up the scarab while Layla watches from her scooter. Arthur tells the man that the scarab belongs to him. After the man willingly returns it to him, Arthur kills him. Elsewhere, Mark explains ownership rules to Stephen. He tells Steven that the reason his power is changing is because Khonshu wants to use Layla's body as his new avatar and that's why he ran away and asked her for a divorce. Steven is furious at how Mark is and tells him that he will never let Mark take control of him again. Enraged, Mark breaks the reflection in which he was talking to Steven. Khonshu appears and scolds Mark for his actions and for changing the terms of their deal. Honshu reminds Mark that if he is no longer an avatar, he may not like Honshu's next candidate. Mark asks Khonshu where they are going. Steven wakes up hungover at a hotel in Giza.
Layla is talking to someone about the events of the last episode as a fake ID is being printed for her. She expresses interest in returning the stolen artifacts to their rightful owners. This is revealed to be her mother, and the family specializes in creating false identities. They remember Leila's father before she says goodbye to Mark in Egypt.
In Cairo, a scarab leads Arthur and his followers to Ammit's tomb. They celebrate when they are informed that Mark Spector is tailing them. Elsewhere, Mark encounters henchmen on rooftops. He hits them with his bare hands, refusing to kill when Steven gets the upper hand. When he recovers, he takes a taxi to the airport, which he stops when the thugs he fought show up right outside. He follows one of them to talk to him. He demands Harrow's whereabouts, but as Stephen takes control, in the next scene Mark is surrounded by several corpses, except for a young one. Konshu tells Mark to lead the boy to a ledge to scare him into revealing Arthur's whereabouts.
but the boy sacrifices himself instead. Mark and Steven have a heated argument about the corpses, which Steven blames on Khonshu.
Mark discusses the situation with Khonshu, who decides to signal the other gods by causing an unexpected solar eclipse. Arthur recognizes Mo immediately, but encourages the others to keep digging no matter what. He tells them that he is about to be called. Mark runs aimlessly as Khonshu informs him that the gods are gathering their avatars. Before Mark opens a portal in the form of a secret stone tunnel. Khonshu promises Mark that he will be there. Stephen's reflection praises their presence inside the Pyramid of Giza.
Mark meets Hathor Yatsil's avatar. Other avatars appear as Mark approaches them. An assembly is convened to hear Khonshu's report. who takes Mark's body to ask the gods for help. Khonshu are reminded that the remaining avatars are only to watch and not interfere in people's affairs. Khonshu calls for sentencing Arthur Harrow for plotting to free Ammit. Arthur Harrow is called in for a meeting and reassures Khonshu and the other avatars with a story about visiting the place for pleasure. Arthur goes on to accuse Khonshu of luring him into searching for Ammit's grave for selfish paranoid reasons, calling him a shamed god. Arthur continues to say that Khonshu is out of his mind and his servant is unwell. When asked for clarification, Arthur presents the facade of Mark Spector and Stephen Grant as a delusion. Khonshu tries to outshout him, eventually trying to attack him, but he is prevented from committing violence in the Chamber. Arthur refers to Mark as a deeply troubled individual who is being mistreated by Honshu in the same way he claims he was treated when he was Honshu's avatar. He begs the gods to take action now before it's too late. Mark is called to speak at the council and asked if he is ill. Mark admits he's not feeling well and needs help, but says it doesn't change the fact that Arthur is a dangerous person. Mark is told that Arthur has committed no crime in the eyes of the council and the case is closed. As Artur leaves, Yacil watches as Mark reflects on his situation. She tells him that he has another way to help.
Yacil tells Mark about a Medjay named Senfu who has been assigned to record the location of Ammit's grave. If Mark can find Senfu's sarcophagus, he can find Ammit too. The Senfu sarcophagus was sold on the black market, so Mark starts out on the streets of Cairo. When he asks the juice vendor for the location of Senfu's sarcophagus, he backs away cautiously as Layla surprises Mark from behind. Mark warns her of the dangers of being there while Honshu watches. Mark and Layla are on the boat, discussing the situation. Layla tells him that she only wants to stop Harrow. Mark apologizes to her and asks about Mogarth, the antiquities collector they are about to meet. They reminisce about their wedding, and Layla asks Mark about his alternate personality Steven. She reminds him that they could work on it together if he told her so. Mark suggests that it may be too late now as they dock.
Mark leaves his bags under the dock and notices that a raft is following them. Layla suggests that they may be followed by Harrow's men. They talk about their legend. Layla greets her contact Beck, who leads them to Mogarth. They watch as Mogarth trains in combat on horseback. Mogart dismounts and greets Layla, who introduces Mark to him as her husband "Rufino". When asked what interests him about the artifact, Mark replied that he only wanted to look. As they look at the sarcophagus, Mark engages Stephen in a private conversation through reflection. Steven orders Mark to touch some two parts of the sarcophagus, he is stopped by Beck and Mogart, who hold him at gunpoint. Beck speaks to Mogarth, who remembers that the other side was interested in the sarcophagus.
It is Harrow who offers to include Mogarth and everyone else in Ammit's "treasure" in exchange for the sarcophagus. Although they try to argue, Arthur continues to rebuke Layla and Mark. The gems in his cane begin to glow as he leads his men to the sarcophagus. Meanwhile, Honshu encourages Mark to summon the suit and give them what they want. Harrow offers to show Mogarth the power, which Mogarth accepts. Harrow holds his staff and casts a spell before the sarcophagus explodes. As he walks away from the explosion, Moon Knight appears. Beck leads Mogarth away from the scene as Moon Knight and Layla engage the security team. Layla takes the opportunity to raid what's left of the sarcophagus, but is interrupted by Beck. Steven forces him to grab the suit and is promptly pierced by two spears. Layla fights back until she ends up stabbing Beck. Mark retrieves the suit and continues to guard Mogart before he arrives ready to fight. As Mogarth attacks, Moon Knight grabs Layla and d throws a spear at Mogarth's back. Two leave.
As they leave, Layla asks Mark why Arthur told her that she has the right to know about Mark. She keeps talking about how she doesn't know Mark at all, and Mark agrees. An episode in which Harrow spots Mark and Layla approaching some area in the desert. Mark and Lala try to put the pieces of fabric together to collect a clue. Mark rips the rearview mirror off the Hummer to call Steven. Steven immediately pulls out the packing tape when Layla walks up to him. When he spots her, he tells her how the Egyptians invented modern navigation before showing her a star-shaped map that he was able to glue together. Stephen suggests that the constellation is simply showing its position at the time of burial. Stars drift over time, which means they need to know where the constellation might have appeared then. Khonshu unexpectedly tells Steven that he remembers that night. Steven follows Khonshu and Layla follows him. Khonshu tells Stephen that they can turn the stars to their exact positions that night. However, this means that this will be his last insult to the gods who threatened to imprison him in stone. Khonshu tells Steven to have Mark release him as soon as he is in jail. Steven summons the suit and imitates Khonshu's movements to flip the stars. With this, Layla can find the location on her tablet. Meanwhile, the other gods' avatars begin to turn Honshu into a stone relic. Steven/Mark falls to the ground, unconscious. Harrow visits Khonshu in his state of stone and tells him that he enjoyed bearing pain on his behalf, which is why he was so comforted by the power of healing. Harrow tells Khonshu that he was forged by torment and that he owes his victory to Khonshu.

We return to Layla, trying to wake up Steven. A car approaches them, firing bullets as Layla rolls the body across the sandbar. The students continue their pursuit until Layla finds a car to hide behind. When they spot the body, lights flash on the road to distract them. As they approach her, she throws a flare at the back of the truck and sets off several explosives. As the truck explodes, Steven appears behind Layla.
As they drive, Mark pleads with Stephen to give him the body, but Stephen informs Layla of their agreement to permanently return the body to Stephen once Mark is done with Honshu. Mark tells Steven that he is going to kill himself and Layla. Steven goes through the tent looking for supplies, and Mark reminds him that this is still his body, with or without Honshu. As Layla packs up, the camera pans back to a shot of blood splatter and a used tool. Leila dresses Steven and tries to kiss him. Steven prevents her from kissing him by telling her a secret: that Mark wants to protect her from becoming Khonshu's avatar. Layla gets very upset and says that it was not his decision. She continues to dress him up and they kiss. She tells him that she will go first, but on the way down Stephen gets hit by a counterweight. He falls awkwardly onto the site and marvels at the historical monuments inside. Layla tells Stephen about her father's archaeological mission, for which he died. Steven tells her that her father would be proud to see her here right now.
They continue on to the site and find bullet casings. Steven determines the shape of the room and draws the symbol of the eye of Horus in the sand, which reflects the shadow on the ceiling. Steven tells Layla that this also represents each of the feelings. Layla determines that the avatar will be the tongue, so they choose this path, expecting it to lead them to the tomb. They come to a room where there is a blood trail. They follow him into the next room, onto a platform. When Steven finds a way out, they hear gunfire from outside. Layla hides when the apprentice is returned to the room by Heck's priest and is mummified by removing his organs and placing them in jars. Stephen can only watch as Leila sits quietly next to the place where the priest is performing the ceremony. Their cover is blown by Stephen, who is attacked by the priest when he tells Layla to run. She runs away, and Stephen drops several shelves on the priest. Layla comes to an open abyss and climbs it. We hear the priest's breath in the walls, and it attacks her. She finds another flare, which she sticks in her eye before throwing it over the edge. Layla pulls herself back to safety and screams. She sees Harrow in the distance.
Steven finds another room and Mark immediately hires him for kissing Layla and for telling her the truth. Stephen reads the hieroglyphs and concludes that they may be in the tomb of Alexander the Great. Harrow talks to Layla, who tells him that he always speaks condescendingly. He tells her that she confirmed her father's belief that Egyptian gods walk among mortals.
tall people. Harrow invites Layla to read Stephen's scale, and she agrees to listen. Mark suggests that Stephen open Alexander's sarcophagus, and there is a mummy inside. Mark asks where the shabti is and Stephen believes it is in his mouth. He opens his mouth and reaches where his tongue should have fallen. Harrow tells Layla that Mark knows everyone who died the day her father was killed. Layla asks if he is trying to convince her that Mark was one of the mercenaries who killed him. Harrow calls her to wake up as she leaves. Steven takes off his shabti as Layla enters. Layla is furious with Mark and calls him to talk. She directly asks him if he killed her father, and he replies that he did not. When she asks if he was there, he admits that he was. She asks how he died and he tells her that his partner killed everyone on the spot when he became greedy. Mark was also shot that night, and he says he should have died. He didn't know how to tell her. She believes that this is how they met because of his bad conscience. As Harrow and his men approach, Mark tells Layla to hide while he holds them back. Layla flees as Mark grabs another item from the sarcophagus.
Harrow and his men arrive and he tells Mark that without Honshu, he now has a decision to make. Mark immediately starts attacking Harrow's men until he shoots Mark twice with his pistol. Mark falls back into a shallow pool of water. He feels his spirit shift into another plane, and the next scene shows a pair of unrelated explorers on safari in Mexico. They stumble upon an Aztec relic and the scene ends as it is shown to be a video playing on a screen in the common room of a mental institution. Mark is in a wheelchair and Layla is in and attaches the magnet to the refrigerator. She takes his winning bingo card and promises to share the prize with him. Mark tries to call out to Steven from the reflection, but falls down, wheelchair-bound. They take him to the doctor. Harrow, who asks him for an honest assessment of his situation. Mark starts to respond, but realizes the illusion when he notices all the Egyptian relics in the office. He overcomes the sedation and breaks into the room with the sarcophagus containing Steven. The two meet and embrace before realizing that they are both conscious in the same world, with the same final memory of being shot. They find more rooms with more sarcophagi and run into Yacil at her avatar hippo farm. Mark and Steven scream.
Open on the boy screaming for help at the bottom of the well, jump on the woman screaming right at the camera. This quickly brings us back to the closed room where Mark is with Dr. Wilson. Harrow, who analyzes it again. The Doctor talks to Mark about his responsibility for his situation. Mark again expresses doubt that his situation is real, and we return to the hippo scene. Behemoth informs Mark and Steven that he and Steven are dead. She unrolls the scroll and welcomes them to the Duat, the Egyptian afterlife. Steven tells Mark that she is Taweret, the goddess of women and children who is to guide them on their journey to the afterlife. Taweret reminds them that this is not the afterlife, but just the afterlife. She tells them about several overlapping unattached conscious planes, including the ancestral plane. She further tells them that since the true nature of the Duat cannot be understood by the human mind, they can perceive the realm as something more recognizable. Mark tells Steven that they envisioned the afterlife as a mental hospital because they are insane. He believes that the afterlife is a reality, and the hospital is an imagination, an organizing principle. He tries to get through a couple of doors, but really ends up on a ship to A'ar. Reed field. Realizing that he is not crazy and that the afterlife in Egypt is real, he turns to Stephen for further guidance.
Stephen asks Taweret, and she reaches into their chests. Taweret removes the hearts from Stephen and Mark to be weighed in the scales of justice. If their hearts are balanced, they can spend their afterlife in the Reedfield. Otherwise, they will be thrown into the frozen sands forever. While Mark tries to discuss the situation with Steven, Taweret draws their attention to the scale. The scales fluctuate, similar to Harrow's tattoo in the first episode. Taweret tells them that the hearts are not full, that is, each of them feels incomplete. She tells them that the unbalanced soul will eventually be captured by the sands of the Duat. Steven asks what she suggests they do, and she suggests they go through the memories stored on the boat to reconcile any past feelings that are still unresolved. She offers to show each other the truth.
Back at the orphanage, Mark and Steven walk down the hallway and explore their past memories. They follow the memory of a boy calling for help. They enter a room filled with dead bodies sitting at cafe tables.
Etheria. Steven approaches the swinging scales as Mark identifies each of the bodies. These are the ones Honshu demanded to be killed in the name of justice. They see a young boy staring. Steven asks why he is in the room with the people he killed and Mark tries to keep him from approaching the boy. Steven goes out anyway and runs after the boy. Stephen follows the boy into the room and locks the door behind him. Mark knocks on the door while Steven watches a barbecue where Mark is with his mother and younger brother. He asks his younger brother if he would like to go to the "cave", and the two of them go into the woods near their house. As they approach, it starts to rain, but Mark encourages his brother to keep going. Following him, Stephen steps on the bird's skeleton. The boys go to the cave when the rain intensifies and begins to fill the cave with water. Steven is desperate to find the boys and hears them screaming for their mother as the water continues to rise. Outside the room, Mark reminds himself that this is just a memory and notices that another door is opening.
Mark visits his family, who are sitting at shiva because of the death of his younger brother. Steven is watching too. Their mother tells their father that she wants her son back. When baby Mark tries to come over, she yells at him that he shouldn't be here. Stephen tearfully watches as she says that his brother drowned because of him. Mark tries to talk to Steven as they move on to the next flashback.
Mark's baby has a birthday and she won't even come down to blow out the candles. The next flashback is another birthday when the mother drinks heavily and keeps blaming the baby Mark and he storms off to his room. Steven follows him but is stopped by Mark. They cross into the street in broad daylight, where Steven asks why Mark only remembers that his mother was meant for him and demands to know what he is hiding. The memory continues to show the father pleading for Mark, who has decided to move out. Mark blames his father for not fixing the situation with his mother. As Steven tries to witness the rest of the flashback, Mark knocks him down again into another. They returned to the desert after the car exploded. Stephen recognizes the hostages killed by Mark in the corpses.
Mark disagrees with the assessment and explains how he was fired from the army for going AWOL in a fugue state. He then talks about how he continued to work for his about the former commander of the Bushman. The task was to raid an Egyptian tomb, but Bushman changed the plan without calling any witnesses. Immediately disagreeing with the decision, Mark says he did everything he could to get them away from Bushman. He says they clearly haven't left since everyone is dead. When Steven asks what happened to Mark, he talks about the grave that has appeared in front of them. A flashback shows a mortally wounded Mark crawling in Khonshu's footsteps to commit suicide. He then hears a voice telling him that this would be a waste of time. Mark decides to ask whose voice it is, and he identifies himself as the god Khonshu. Khonshu tells Mark that he is looking for a warrior to become his avatar. Feeling his death on him, Mark expresses his confusion about what choice to make. Khonshu peers into Mark's mind and considers him a worthy candidate. He offers Mark in exchange for his life, Mark must swear to protect the night travelers and take revenge on those who harm them. Steven sees how Honshu took advantage of Mark, but Mark saw it as an opportunity to die, having only lived the life of an assassin. Honshu again demands a promise from Mark, and Mark complies. Honshu manifests an astral form to bring Mark back to life as his vengeance fist, Moon Knight. Steven draws their attention to the scales, which begin to balance further, but they feel the stone on their ship.
They return to the deck to find Taweret revealing many unbalanced souls condemned ahead of time, an indication that fear is spreading in the world above. Steven asks her if they can bring him back to get to Honshu. Although she sees the risks, she tells them to finish balancing the scales before sending them back. At the orphanage, Mark promises to tell Steven the truth, but begins to relive the self-harm episode until he wakes up in a room with Dr. Wilson. Harrow. Dr. Harrow asks him why he created Stephen. Dr. Harrow tells him
The memory jumps to Stephen's memory, where he sees that Mark made Stephen up. This is Steven's first flashback, but is interrupted by Mark's mother, who breaks in to beat him with a belt. Mark brings Steven out and explains that he created Steven to deal with the abuse he received from his mother. Whenever she was not around, Stephen's personality allowed Mark to feel motherly love. Mark tells Stephen that he will have to live a life where he can believe that his mother loves him and that she is still alive, a shocking revelation.
to Stephen. Mark then says that when many years later his father called about her Shiva, he was unable to do so. Steven refuses to accept this story and wakes up in a room with a doctor. Harrow, who recognizes Mark's other personality in him. Stephen also recognizes Harrow and begins to worry that the orphanage is a ploy by Taweret. Harrow asks Stephen about what Mark may have told him. Steven again refuses to accept his mother's death, and a glass partition appears between them. Dr. Harrow apologizes for the misunderstanding and offers to call her since they have her number. When he hands the phone to Steven, the partition is gone. Steven admits out loud that his "mom" is dead.
In the next scene, Mark's family sits with Shiva for his mother, and an adult Mark stands outside a building drinking while his father gestures for him to join them from the inside. Although Mark is appropriately dressed in all black with a yarmulke on his head, he walks off talking to himself. He cries and smashes his yarmulke on the ground before holding it to his chest and saying, "I'm sorry." When Mark tries to feel his pain, Steven's personality takes over, as he taught her to do whenever there is pain associated with his mother. Steven wakes up with no memory of how he got there and is on the phone with his mother, although he is obviously not on the phone. As Steven wanders aimlessly, talking on his cell phone to no one, Mark describes the situation.
Mark's mother died two months before the events of the show. Mark tells Steven how he couldn't stand the shame of how his mother made him feel. Steven tells Mark that his brother's death was not his fault as he was still a child when it happened. The ground shakes, telling Stephen that they have reached the Gate of Osiris to the world above. She regretfully informs them that the scales were left unbalanced, meaning that their souls could be taken over by the Duat. Several undead souls board the ship, and Mark recognizes them again as the souls he took as Moon Knight. As Mark fights them, Steven helps and eventually finds the strength to help Mark fight, but is dragged off the ship. Mark pleads with Stephen to return and urges the ship to stop. Steven's personality tries to run after the ship, but ends up freezing in sands. Mark cries for Stephen again, but Taweret tells him that his scales have balanced, meaning that he has reached the end of his journey. Mark looks around and finds himself in the Reed Field.
Autopsy on Mark's body, pulled from the pool where he was shot. Harrow watches as they remove Ammit's ushbati from his body. Harrow leaves a scarab on Mark's chest. Layla hides in the shadows and quietly stops the attacker. He combines the ushbati with his cane, which turns into a long staff with a new handle as he leaves with the rest of his students. Layla runs up to Mark's body and immediately sees that he is dead. She removes the scarab from his body, opens it and follows in his direction.
Harrow and his men are stopped by an Egyptian military blockade. They demand to show documents to Harrow. He replies, "You must show me your souls." He then sticks his staff into the ground and a purple light passes through each soldier, killing all but one. In Ammit's view, Harrow identifies the survivor as a good person. The students go to move all the bodies. Layla hid, disguised as a student, and is horrified. She tries to approach Harrow to kill him, but Taweret speaks to her through the dead soldiers. She tells her that Mark can summon the suit once she breaks Khonshu's ushbati in the Hall of the Gods. Layla says she will fight Harrow alone.
In the next scene, Harrow is climbing the pyramid that contains the Hall of the Gods. He enters and is immediately confronted by the other avatars who know he is there to free Ammit. Harrow makes quick work of the avatars while Layla searches for Khonshu's ushbati. Harrow frees Ammit from her ushbati and she manifests as an upright crocodile with long dark braids of hair.
Ammit tells Harrow that his scales are out of balance, and Harrow tells her that he is ready to accept his fate. Ammit goes on to say that Harrow must be her avatar, as he was the one who set her free. She tells him that his death is being delayed and that he must serve her while alive. He accepts her offer and she puts her hand on his head, causing his eyes to glow purple. Layla finds Khonshu's ushbati and smashes it on the ground, freeing Khonshu. Khonshu does not see Mark present and offers Layla the place of his avatar. Layla is shocked, but Khonshu tries to negotiate. Layla refuses and Khonshu goes to confront Ammit and her followers himself. As Ammit and Khonshu talk, Harrow tells his students to look for whoever freed him.
In the Reed Field, Taweret introduces Mark. Although Mark feels at ease, he misses Steven. Ta wert reminds him that he is with the Duat. Mark does not agree to leave Stephen in the sands, but Taweret warns him that he will not be able to return if he goes looking for him. Mark doesn't care and runs towards the sands, leaving the field to disappear behind him. He approaches the spot where Stephen fell. Khonshu chides Ammit for using her students to conquer the world. Harrow tells Ammit not to listen as Honshu only wants to tie her up. Mark finds Stephen's frozen body and apologizes for abandoning him, as Stephen never left Mark. He tells Steven that he was the only real superpower he ever had, the ability to live another life. As Mark begins to petrify, the gates of Osiris open and he and Steven come to life.
Khonshu and Ammit start fighting in the Chamber. Taweret helps Mark and Steven through the gate, and Mark awakens from his death. Honshu senses his presence and Mark transforms back into Moon Knight. Honshu talks to Moon Knight, where Mark and Steven agree that this will be their last mission as Honshu's avatar. Honshu agrees and turns the sky into night. Layla has another avatar that tells him that they need to trap Ammit in a mortal body before he dies. Harrow spots them and destroys the cell, trapping Layla inside. In desperation, Layla calls out to Taweret, accepting her offer to temporarily become her avatar.
At the top of the pyramid, Harrow throws a sign to Ammit's disciples in Cairo. They begin to judge everyone around them, sending all unbalanced souls to Ammit. Ammit grows to gigantic proportions as she consumes more souls. Layla appears wearing an outfit similar to Taweret, but with two short swords and wings (Layla's alter ego is referred to as the "Scarlet Scarab" in the comics). Moon Knight flies to Harrow with Ammit watching him. Harrow fights Moon Knight as Mark and Steven while Khonshu manifests in giant form to fight Ammit. Harrow attacks Moon Knight, but Layla intervenes. As Harrow recovers, Mark and Steven take turns greeting Layla. Harrow's students appear ready for battle.
Ammit and Khonshu argue about each other's moral goals - ridding the world of sinners. Khonshu claims that the difference was that he waited until the sin was committed, whereas Ammit acts in a biased way. Moon Knight and Layla battle Harrow and his men, while Steven and Mark switch costumes to showcase their different powers. Harrow fighting Laylo y and Moon Knight, eventually distracting Layla by frightening the group hiding in the van. Layla rescues them and one of them asks if she is an Egyptian superhero, which she confirms.
Harrow tells Mark that if Ammit had ruled, his brother would never have died because she would have killed Mark before the act was done. Mark watches as Ammit strikes Khonshu as Harrow plunges his staff into his chest. Mark is rendered unconscious again and wakes up with Harrow's staff pressed against his unconscious head. Mark asks Steven if it was him, to which Steven replies "no chance". Layla frees herself and asks Mark what happened. He tells her that he passed out and doesn't remember. She tells him that she knows how to defeat Ammit and bring in Harrow. Mark carries Harrow into the Chamber and places him on the altar. Layla tells him that they can use the room to bind Ammit to Harrow's body. When Ammit realizes what's going on, she pleads with Khonshu, who tells her that it's over.
Ammit is bonded to Harrow, who warns that she will never be contained. Khonshu tells Mark to end her, and Mark prepares to kill Harrow to do so. Layla reminds Mark that he is free to choose, even if Honshu demands that he choose revenge. Mark tells Khonshu that if he wants Ammit dead, he must do it himself. Mark then demands that Honshu release "us". Honshu does so and we return to Mark/Steven with the doctor. Harrow. Like dr. Harrow offers to "continue" their work. Mark wakes up in Steven's apartment, tied to the bedpost again. Now there are two goldfish.
Mid-credits - Arthur Harrow / Ammit - a patient in the Sinkevich Psychiatric Hospital. He is in a wheelchair, mildly sedated and unable to lift his coffee cup. Arthur is picked up by a man in a black suit who speaks Spanish. Arthur notices the corpses as he is being driven to the limousine. Khonshu sits across from him. He explains that he never let Mark go because Mark never realized how disturbed he really was. Honshu then introduces Arthur to Jake Lockley - Mark's third persona - the deadly spirit of vengeance that has taken over every blackout, the person who always brought the body back to the London flat, the person who bought the second goldfish. Every time we were shown something on the show that didn't have an explanation, it was Jake.
